David Cameron visits Corby
11th January 2007
David Cameron, Leader of the Conservative Party, paid a visit to Corby recently to see the regeneration of the town for himself.
David, shown here with Louise Bagshawe had a busy schedule. He met with Northamptonshire Police and local youngsters at the Connaughty Center, to hear about the many of our teenagers who are victims of crime committed by other youngsters. Our teenagers suffer from bullies and yobs too. David demanded to know why Labour won't even record such crimes in the "official figures".
He also met local community activist Yvonne von Butjar and her disabled husband Les. Yvonne organised the Neighbourhood Watch on the Kingswood estate in Corby and helped to make her local area safer. She won the Community Spirit Award at the Spirit of Corby awards last year and is shown holding it.
Yvonne commented to the Evening Telegraph, "David really seemed to care. He agreed with me that youngsters are victims of crime too and that it's poorer people on estates who suffer from a lack of policing. David told me he's interested in improving education in the town so Corby youngsters can get better paid jobs. He was very optimistic about regeneration here, I really liked him!"
After the meeting and hearing from Louise Bagshawe about Yvonne's work, David Cameron said: "Yvonne's story shows just how much of a difference local people getting involved in their own communities can make. Yvonne and Les are hugely impressive people and show the pride residents have in Corby."
Afterwards, David and Louise visited Corby's flagship school, Brooke Weston where David was grilled by local students on his policies. Louise is happy to say that these amazing children would give Newsnight's Jeremy Paxman a run for his money! Improving education is one of David's priorities nationally and is a huge priority for Corby. David commented on how impressive he found the students and staff at Brooke Weston.
