Louise Bagshawe MP backs Government delivering for local communities in Corby and East Northamptonshire

16th August 2010

Louise is pleased to see the changes the Government has already made to the way local authorities are being given the flexibility to deliver results for towns such as Corby.

A number of new measures have been delivered for local councils and communities:

  • The bin tax has been scrapped, councils have been given the option to freeze council tax, and a more realistic small business rate relief scheme has been introduced to help small businesses through the recession.
  • The expensive and bureaucratic Home Information Packs (HIPs) have been abolished, which will give those selling their homes much greater freedom, while significant financial incentives have been offered to councils to build more homes to support economic growth.

Louise Bagshawe said:

“Decisions that affect local communities should be made by local people and local representatives, and not be hindered by Whitehall bureaucracy and targets. I’m pleased that the Government has already made significant progress in this area. Elected councillors in Corby and East Northants will have a much greater say over the issues that affect their areas, and will be able to decide what is right for our towns and villages.

A number of common sense and anti-bureaucratic measures have been advanced to improve safety and enjoyment in communities such as Corby, which include proposals to give councils stronger powers on licensing laws to tackle alcohol-related problems – something that I know many of my constituents are concerned about.”
