MP backs local residents over nuclear waste appeal
27th May 2010
Louise Bagshawe, MP for Corby and East Northants, met with local WasteWatchers campaigners at the House of Commons this week to give their campaign her support.
Throughout the general election campaign, Louise backed local residents in their efforts to oppose the plans for nuclear waste to be transported to and dumped at a site near King’s Cliffe.
Northamptonshire County Council unanimously rejected the plans on 25 March 2010, and an appeal to overturn the decision has now been submitted to the Secretary of State by the company behind the proposals.
Louise Bagshawe said:
“I was delighted to meet Chris Leuchars and Clare Langan from King’s Cliffe WasteWatchers at the House of Commons. As I made clear during the election campaign, I feel MPs should stand up for their constituents on major planning issues such as this.
“Augean’s application for a nuclear dump is completely inappropriate and it is no surprise the County Council unanimously rejected it. I will be pressing the Secretaries of State for Local Government and Energy to respect the local decision here and turn down the appeal.
“As I promised at the public meeting in King’s Cliffe in March, I will fight this with local residents all the way.”
